Growing...

I am back home with JD and feeling fatter every day. I am on my Ob/Gyn rotation at OHSU and loving it so far! I gained a total of 2lbs at 13 weeks, which is exciting because I am just over 3 months along and more comfortable about telling people we are preggo! The first trimester was awful for me, nausea and vomiting 1 - 3 times a day just ruins what could have been a beautiful day. You then find yourself with blood shot eyes, smeared make-up, burst capillaries (small red spots) around your eyelids, and a headache...oh, and a bloody nose to top it off. Did I mention the extreme fatigue, bloating, gas and burping? My life has consisted of working from 7am to 5/6pm and sleep...literally. I found the couch as soon as I made it home to take "a nap," meaning 2-3 hours of deep "couch" sleep and then some movement to my bedroom for a more comfortable night.

Talk about difficult being sick for 2 months while trying to impress your Attending!! The first day I told the physicians in Madras, the comment was, "Well, my advice for next time is 'Don't get pregnant during your 3rd year'" from the doctor that thought I was on the verge of crying all day (a particularly bad morning going from Colonoscopy to vomiting, 2nd Colonoscopy, vomit, etc).

Today, however, I am happy to say that I have only thrown up once this week!(currently one day away from 15 weeks) And I have my energy back, I even ran stairs last night:) (Not for fun, but because I am working night shift on L&D service...it was a tragic night to say the least. Obstetrics, like all clerkships in the hospital, is not immune to death. This baby was fine, but mom had an unsurvivable burst berry aneurysm.)

On a happier note, I had my first Dr.'s appointment the other day and heard baby's heart beat strongly ticking away at 140 bpm! It's really in there! You could hear he/she moving as the heart beat kept changing position across my lower abdomen and you heard a whish of interference on the doppler. I wish JD had been there since my excitement only goes so far. I get to hear baby heartbeats (and movement) all the time in OB clinic and on the L&D ward. I told him that I will have to check out a doppler from the school so he can hear it too! Right now though, I would like to just see him more than 10 minutes a day as he gets home from work and I head off for my 3rd year "work."
